11th November 2018 is the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, which marked the end to hostilities of the First World War. It will also mark the end to four years of “Centenary” commemorations of the War, seen across the country and the media.

Dorking Choral Society is marking this significant day with a special commemoration concert at St Martin’s Church, Dorking, in the evening of Sunday 11th November. This will follow various Civic events at the Church and the town’s War Memorial during the day.

The concert is built around the theme “We Will Remember Them”, and will include a Roll Call of all the men (some of them just boys) who died in the conflict and whose names are recorded on War Memorials in and around Dorking.  The concert, under the direction of conductor David Young, with the New London Chamber Orchestra, will include pieces by Parry, Elgar, Brahms, Finzi and Vaughan Williams, interspersed with short poetry readings.  The second half will comprise the magnificent Mozart Requiem, sung in a new edition, with four soloists.  The concert begins at 6:30 pm, with the Roll Call starting at 6:00 pm.

The event is being presented in conjunction with Dorking Museum, who will be displaying their exhibition “WW1 Home Front: Dorking 1914 – 1918” in the Church on the day and also free to visitors for the following week (until 16th November).  The exhibition reflects the huge impact the war had on all aspects of life here in our local community, for the first time displaying together the five exhibitions that the Museum has run during the centenary years.  Alongside the main exhibition, a screen will display a large amount of biographical detail on many of the local men who died in the war, which makes their sacrifice seem much more real to us today.

The concert and exhibition form part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival.  It is supported by The Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust, and has the endorsement of the Royal British Legion.
